Careif featured in ‘geopsychiatry’ symposiums at the 2023 World Psychiatric Association Congress

The World Psychiatric Association (WPA) recently held its 23rd World Congress in Vienna, Austria from 27 September until 1 October.

We are delighted that Careif was prominently featured by our colleagues from the International Institute for Geopsychiatry who presented two pioneering, and state-of-the-art, symposiums on ‘geopsychiatry’.

This is an exciting new intersectoral field focusing on the interface between geopolitical events and their impact on the practice of psychiatry across all ages and subspecialties. The two symposiums delved into the latest advancements and research in this field. For more information on geopsychiatry, see this recent report from the WPA’s Geopsychiatry Action Plan Working Group.

Symposium: CAPE Vulnerability Index - Role of Global Vulnerability and Mental Disorders

The CAPE Vulnerability Index is a new approach to fund mental health, it offers a different perspective to rebalance and challenge prevailing narratives of how foreign aid is utilised.

The symposium was chaired by Albert Persaud who provided an in-depth understanding of the methodology, design, and real-world utility of the CAPE Vulnerability Index. João Mauricio Castaldelli-Maia discussed the implications of the Index in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Symposium: Geopsychiatry: Geopolitical Determinants of Mental Health - a global perspective

Chaired by our Careif Patron, Dinesh Bhugra CBE, this symposium offered a comprehensive exploration of the emerging field of geopsychiatry. Helena Moura discusses the intersection of these determinants and the climate crisis, with a focus on Brazil. Finally, Kanthee Anantapong presented the perspectives from geopsychiatry on migration and mental health, in particular across Asia.

Careif’s connections
