Event - Training provided on working with interpreters in mental health

A one-day training on working with interpreters was conducted in Darlington on 28 November 2023. Delegates included interpreters for a number of languages and a range of mental health professionals from local NHS Trusts.

Professor Rachel Tribe, a trustee at Careif, spoke about working with interpreters in mental health, Phillipe Muriel (National Register of Public Service Interpreters, NRPSI) gave a presentation on the challenges of interpreting in the mental health setting. Concluding the event, Wendy Peacock of Everyday Language Solutions Ltd summarised the day and spoke about a duty of care to interpreters.

Everyday Language Solutions is a not-for-profit organisation that provides a comprehensive range of interpretation and translation services to the North East community and beyond. A range of additional resources will be sent to all delegates. The day included talks, role plays, workshops and discussions.

The event was hosted by Dr Ash Summers from the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Teesside University in the Centre for Professional and Executive Development. A range of additional resources will be sent to all delegates. Emily O’Shea of Careif kindly managed the majority of the logistics surrounding the day.

Themes that arose included:

  • the need for Interpreting as a profession to be formally recognised, at present there are a range of qualifications available. The National Register of Public Service Interpreters is advocating for this recognition, as it is important that the quality of interpretation offered is of a high standard and that service users receive good care.

  • the issue of vicarious trauma for interpreters and the lack of support systems for many interpreters.
